Filler: Old Spice Commercials make you smell like a man's man (5-1-12)

Note: Until I finish the Kony 2012 vid analysis, I will be posting other interesting things like this video.

Old Spice commercials featuring Terry Crews are now my favorite commercials of all time. I mean who doesn't like a famous black actor shouting at you on screen to sell body spray and deodorant? With enough explosions to fill an action movie? The commercials are also filled with many different ways to catch your attention, like multiple ridiculous sayings or when Terry Crews opens his eyes really wide and yells about Old Spice Odor Blocker Body Wash's power to make you smell good.

First thing you'll notice upon watching is that there is a man in the shower who is yelling at you that "Old Spice Odor Blocker Body Wash is so powerful it can block B.O. for sixteen hours!"
He goes on to compare the blocking power to being as powerful as he is, where his "abs" agree with his claim that O.S.O.B.B.W. is as powerful as he is.
-What is so appealing about his statement?
Terry Crews looks like a really strong, ladies' man. He appears exactly as many males want to be like in their life. And when Terry says that this body wash is as powerful as he is, men immediately think "Hey, maybe I can be like Terry Crews too. I only have to buy this body wash."
It plays on the desires to look good and smell good.

Another feature of these videos is the overused but hilarious special effects. Terry has "abs" talking to the camera, his arms appear left and right, there are tons of explosions, we get a look inside Terry's armpit, and there is a tiger-like thing that Terry sits on at the very end of this compilation of commercials. And, of course, we get more shouting Terry and various "Chuck Norris" moments along the way.
Two suns! Amazing!
This commercial is likely targeting young male city residents. Why?  Terry Crews is the spokesperson for the entire compilation, and the many places you see in the video resemble urban housing and high rises. It shows Terry in the same light as many men living downtown. Wouldn't you listen to him more if he looks like he has experienced the same lifestyle as you? By creating a relatable character, Terry establishes his credibility with the viewer, so you'd think he knows what he's yelling about.

Biggest thing omitted from this message: Evidence of the power of Old Spice Odor Blocker Body Wash. Where is the proof? A big guy who claims it works? If that were always true, one could claim that rubbing lemon slices on your feet will moisturize your feet for 72 hours. Oh yes, and to authenticate it, we'll have women yell about it at the top of their lungs. Ah, the wonders of media.

Old Spice certainly created the most comical commercials I have ever seen, but unfortunately, since I don't really want to look like Terry Crews (or smell for that matter), this commercial is wasted on me. They fail to sell their product to me.

But they gave me something to watch on the weekend. That's great, right?

  1. Jayne, after reading your opinion about the old spice articles, i would have to say, I totally agree with you! I find it funny how in the commercials, they use strong, big, handsome-looking guys to set an example for say, maybe a not so handsome guy. I just find that funny. Also, after reading your opinion, i couldn't help but laugh (in a good way.) Great post!
